Multi-Robot Rendezvous Search Problem
Dr. Deniz Özsoyeller​, July 5, 2019

Dr. Deniz Özsoyeller presented a seminar entitled “Modeling and Characterization of High TCR, Low Noise Si/Si 1−x Ge x Multi-Quantum Well” on July 5, 2019. Dr. Deniz Özsoyeller received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from International Computer Institute, Ege University in 2008 and 2014. In 2006, she received her B.S. degree in Computer Engineering from Izmir University of Economics ranking first of her department in graduation. In 2010, she was rewarded the TUBITAK International Ph.D. Research Fellowship and was a Research Scholar in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, US, during 2010-2012. She has been working as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Engineering at Final International University, North Cyprus, since 2017. Her research interests include robot motion planning, distributed algorithms and wireless sensor networks.

Dr. Atia Shafique​ presented a seminar entitled “Modeling and Characterization of High TCR, Low Noise Si/Si 1−x Ge x Multi-Quantum Well” on June 24, 2019. Dr. Atia Shafique received the B.S. degree from University of Engineering Technology Taxila, Pakistan in 2006, in Electrical Engineering and her Ph.D. in electronics engineering from Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 2018. Currently, she is working as Postdoc in Microelectronics research group at Sabanci University. Prior to her Ph.D, she worked as Backend IC design Engineer at Institute of Applied Technologies, Islamabad, Pakistan. Her research primarily focuses on design, modeling and characterization of infrared detectors. Her research interests include mix-signal readout design for infrared imaging systems, MOSFET cryogenic device modelling, and MIM energy harvesters.

Dr. Seraj Fayyad presented a seminar entitled “Enabling Measurable Security for Systems run upon IoT using Multi-Metrics Approach” on June 24, 2019. Dr. Seraj Fayyad, was a PhD researcher at the University of Oslo, where he defended his thesis successfully in Oct 2018, he received his M.Sc. degree in computer engineering in the area of «reliable -systems» from the University Duisburg-Essen, Germany. His research interests include IT security with concentration on measurable security for system built upon the Internet of Things (IoT). He was involved in several international projects, including - Security in IoT for Smart Grids (IoTsec), nSHIELD for measurable security in IoT systems, Citi-Sense-MOB for mobile air quality measurements and GravidPluss.

Resonators and Waveguides for Fiber Optics and Integrated Photonics
Prof. Dr. Ali SerpengüzelJune 26, 2019

Prof. Dr. Ali Serpengüzel presented a seminar entitled “Resonators and Waveguides for Fiber Optics and Integrated Photonics” on June 26, 2019. Ali Serpengüzel received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Yale University. At Yale, he worked on stimulated Raman scattering from droplets and sprays. Later on, he joined Polytechnic University, Microparticle Photophysics Laboratory for postdoctoral work, where he performed the first coupling experiment of solid microspheres to optical fibers. Afterwards, he joined Bilkent University as a faculty member, where he concentrated his research on the optoelectronic properties of semiconductor microcavities. He is currently a Professor of Physics and the Director of the Koç University, Microphotonics Research Laboratory, Est. 2000. His current research focuses on integrated photonics with optical many novel microresonator and waveguide structures. Other research interests include optical spectroscopy in complex media, nanophotonics, nonlinear optics, and laser diagnostics. He is a fellow of SPIE, a senior member of IEEE and OSA, and a member of Sigma-Xi.

Analysis of Wave Propagation Characteristics and Design Methods in Two Dimensional Photonic Bandgap Structures

Dr. Onur Erkan​ presented a seminar entitled “Analysis of Wave Propagation Characteristics and Design Methods in Two Dimensional Photonic Bandgap Structures” on June 12, 2019. Onur Erkan received his B.Sc. degree from electrical engineering from Yıldız Technical University, in 2007 and M.Sc. degree from electronics and communication engineering from Doguş University in 2013. Expected graduation date for Ph.D. degree in electronics and communication engineering from Istanbul Technical University is July 2019. His Ph.D. thesis focused on investigating the wave propagation characteristics and design methods of photonic bandgap structures. Currently, he is working at the Vodafone Telekomünikasyon A.Ş. as an expert. He is also serving as part-time instructor at the Vodafone Red Academy covering internal courses and some BS courses. His research interests are in the fields of periodic structures, microwave and RF communications, optical communications, microwave engineering and electromagnetics.

Disaster Robotics

Dr. Figen Özen presented a seminar entitled “Disaster Robotics” on May 22, 2019. Figen Özen received her BS, MS and PhD degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Boğaziçi University. Her graduation project was on Satellite Communications, MS (Variable Structure Control of a Manipulator with Four Degrees of Freedom) and PhD (Novel Control Strategies for Flexible-Link Manipulators) theses were on Robotics. She taught part-time at Koç, Doğuş Istanbul, and Istanbul Technical Universities. She is currently a faculty member at Haliç University, teaches part-time at Kadir Has University and will teach part-time at Istanbul Technical University. Her research interests include Robotics, Machine Intelligence, Disaster Technologies (Disaster Robotics and the role of Smart Grids in disasters, in particular). She has authored two textbooks, authored and co-authored many papers, attended numerous conferences in Turkey and abroad. She has been advising the design and realization of search robots. Currently, she is working on machine learning, and deep learning, in particular. She is a member of IEEE SMC, RA and CI Societies and TC on Soft Computing, IFAC and TC on Robotics, TOK and EMO.

Admission Control Policies in Loss Networks

Canan Pehlivan presented a seminar entitled “Admission Control Policies in Loss Networks” on March 28, 2019. Canan Pehlivan received her PhD degree in Industrial Engineering from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne, France, in 2014. Prior to her PhD, she got her BSc and MSc degrees in Industrial Engineering from Bilkent University and Middle East Technical University (METU), respectively, both in Ankara, Turkey. Between her BSc and MS studies, she worked at Aselsan for three years. After her PhD study, she worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Control and Industrial Engineering in Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Nantes, France in 2015. She then worked as a visiting professor at Sabancı University in the year 2016. Recently, she worked as an assistant professor at the Industrial Engineering Department in Yaşar University. Her research interests include decision making under uncertainty and operations research applications in various fields such as logistics, healthcare, sustainable energy systems and agroecology.

Nicat Aliyev has taken his Bsc degree in mathematics from Dokuz Eylül university in 2008. He completed his master degree in financial mathrmatics in 2011 with the thesis entitled " Mathematical Tools in Barrier Options Pricing" unders supervision of Dr. Muzaffer Akat at Bahçeşehir university. On January 2018, he completed his PhD in applied mathematics in the area of numerical analysis at Koç university under supervision of Assoc. Prof. Emre Mengi.

Dr. İlker Bekmezci presented a seminar entitled “Flying Ad Hoc Networks - FANET” on May 4, 2018. İlker Bekmezci received B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in computer engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1994, 1998, 2008, respectively. He was an associate professor with the Department of Computer Engineering, Turkish Air Force Academy, Istanbul, Turkey. He also served as vice director of Aeronautics and Space Technologies Institute (ASTIN). His current research interests are in wireless communications, ad hoc networks, especially flying ad hoc networks.

Dr. Evren Güney presented a seminar entitled “OR Approaches to Influence Maximization Problem in Social Networks” on March 19, 2018. Dr. Evren Güney received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering all fromBoğaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1999, 2002, and 2009, respectively. Since 2011, he has been apart-time faculty member in the Industrial Engineering Department of İstanbul Arel University. Hisresearch interests are optimization problems in wireless sensor networks and social networks, heuristicand metaheuristic approaches for solving optimization problems. Apart from his academic title, he is oneof the founding partners of Akampus Youth Marketing, which provides marketing technology solutionscombining social networks, big data and web/mobile technologies. Akampus has been serving to Turkey’slargest companies such as P&G, Microsoft, Intel, Akbank, Turkcell, Coca Cola, Rowenta, ZorluHolding… etc. He is also an active profile in Turkish start-up ecosystem and a mentor in StartupBootcamp / Starter’s Hub Turkey.

His research is in the area of co-design methodologies, in particular, development of system-level design methods for next generation robotic systems powered by controllable compliant actuation. His research interests include multidisciplinary design optimization, advanced prosthetics, and rehabilitation robotics.

After graduation, she worked as a Software Development Engineer for Microsoft, Redmond, WA. Since 2012, she has been working as a Senior Engineer at AirTies Wireless Networks, conducting research, as well as defining and developing products.

Dr. Gökcan Karakuş​ presented a seminar entitled “An Envelope Based Earthquake Early Warning Algorithm Using Real-Time Bayesian Analysis” on November 29, 2017. Dr. Gökcan Karakuş received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Bogazici University in 2007, and his M.S. and Ph.D degrees in Civil Engineering from California Institute of Technology in 2008 and 2016, respectively. He worked in structural engineering design offices in California, specializing in seismic design and analysis. His research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, pattern recognition, Bayesian updating, stochastic system analysis, real-time warning systems, robust control theory, mega structures, space structures, dynamic analysis and design of structures and finite element analysis.

She received her B.Sc. degrees in Civil Engineering and Geomatic Engineering from ITU and she received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from ITU, in Geomatic Engineering and Construction Management, respectively. She conducted Post-Doctoral research in Sustainable Buildings Design Lab at University of Liege (ULg), Belgium.

Dr. Mustafa Hekimoğlu holds BS and MSc degrees from Industrial Engineering at Dokuz Eylül University and Boğaziçi University. He received his PhD on Operations Management at Erasmus University, Rotterdam in 2015. Afterwards, he worked at a private company as a project manager and scientific consultant for research projects in fields of operations research and operations management for one year. Since 2016, he is working at the Industrial Engineering Department of Işık University as an assistant professor. His research areas are inventory control, spare parts and maintenance optimization, stochastic modelling and system dynamics.

Dr. Odysseas Kanavetas presented a seminar entitled “Adaptive Policies under Side Constraints and an Application on an Inventory Problem” on October 4, 2017.Dr. Odysseas Kanavetas is currently a postdoctoral research assistant at department of Business Administration, Koc University. Before, he was postdoctoral research fellow at department of Industrial Engineering, Sabanci University, Turkey. He received the B.Sc. degree in Mathematics (2005), the M.Sc. degree in Operations Research (2009) and Ph.D. degree in Operations Research (December, 2014) all of them from National and Kapodistrian University, Athens, Greece. His research interests lie in the areas of Operations Research and Stochastic Processes. In particular, his main interests concern optimization and adaptive learning aspects of stochastic systems with applications in queueing systems, healthcare management and supply chain management.

Dr. Dingeç received his B.S. degree from Istanbul Technical University in 2005, M.S. degree from Boğaziçi University in 2007, and Ph.D. degree from Boğaziçi University in 2013, all in industrial engineering. Between October 2014 and October 2015, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, GA, USA. Since February 2016, he has been working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Istanbul Kemerburgaz University.

In 2005, she became a full time faculty at the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at Yeditepe University where she has been the department chair since May, 2016.

Dr. Demir is a chief researcher at the Speech and Language Processing Laboratory of TUBITAK-BILGEM. She holds a PhD in Computer Science from University of Delaware. Her PhD work on accessibility was nominated for Outstanding Dissertation in the Mathematical Sciences and Engineering in 2010. She earned her BSc and MSc Degrees in Computer Engineering from Marmara University and Boğaziçi University, respectively.

Dr. Kerem Ugurlu is currently a research associate at University of Washington, Seattle in applied math department. He is affiliated with computational finance and risk management (CFRM) masters program. Dr. Ugurlu's research is on applied probability and stochastic optimization and its applications in finance. He holds a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from University of Southern California. Formerly, Dr. Ugurlu earned his B.Sc. and MSc. in computer science and engineering and mathematics from Sabanci University.

Mr. Karabulut presented a seminar entitled “Sustainability” on January 25, 2017. Mr. Karabulut has graduated from Istanbul Lisesi in 1997 and from the department of Mechanical Engineering at Bogaziçi University in 2002. He completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Koç University in 2004. He is actively working in the fields of sustainable cities, renewable energy and environmental infrastructure projects since 2001. His skills include project management, financial analysis, strategic planning and performance monitoring and evaluation. After assuming different professional roles in foreign companies’ Turkey offices, Mr. Karabulut has co-founded the first Turkish company working on sustainability management in 2007. His specific experience is focused on resource efficiency and risk management for public and private investments, as well as on development aid missions for international financial institutions and strategic action plans of local governments. Beside his managerial responsibilities, he is also working on his PhD thesis at Galatasaray University.

Dr. Onur Şeker presented a seminar entitled “Development Of A Buckling-Controlled Brace” on January 19, 2017. Dr. Onur Şeker studied structural engineering at Iowa State University with Prof. Jay Shen. His research included various projects related to seismic behavior of steel structures with a special emphasis on the two major lateral resisting systems: Braced frames and moment-resisting steel frames. He earned his M.Sc. degree in 2011 from Yildiz Technical University, where he completed his undergraduate studies in 2009. Since completing his PhD in July 2016, he has been in a post-doctoral research associate position at Iowa State University.

Dr. Esen, Professor of Civil Engineering in Kuwait University graduated with MS degree from Civil Engineering Department of Robert Collage, Istanbul, Turkey in 1967 and obtained Ph. D. degree in Hydraulics-Environmental Engineering from Colorado State University, CO, USA in 1971. Dr. Ilkin has actively participated in the development of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research and the hydraulics and coastal engineering laboratory at this institute. He was involved in a number of committees at Kuwait University and Bogazici University for accreditation and curriculum improvement of engineering programs.

Since 2015, she is working as a research assistant at Istanbul Technical University.

Dr. Aydın Ulaş received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering from Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, in 1999, 2001, and 2008 respectively. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher and assistant professor at Università degli Studi di Verona, Italy from 2009 to 2012 on the FP7 project SIMBAD (Similarity based Pattern Analysis and Recognition). He has been working as a senior researcher and solution architect for Argela Technologies on SDN (Software Defined Networking) and NFV (Network Function Virtualization) technologies for the telecommunications industry since July 2012. He is the Turkish consortium lead and work package leader for the Celtic+ project SIGMONA and guest lecturer at various universities.
